When I first founded PropelAuth, I had an idea of what I felt was wrong with authentication tools today. The idea was largely based on my own personal experiences and where I felt existing tools were lacking.
Fast forward to a few months later, I had done some basic user interviews with people in my network and built an MVP. I put it out into the world and waited for hordes of people to come rushing to us because of how great the product was, and as everyone else in the world already knows, that’s not how this works.
I started to do cold outreach with a really simple message:
Hi, I’m Andrew Israel. I’m the founder of a startup building a product in the user authentication space. I noticed you already have authentication on your site, and I was wondering if you’d be interested in chatting about what you like and don’t like about it.
What was really incredible to me, was how many people responded. I got responses like
ya, I’m going through the same thing right now, happy to jump on a quick call.

The thing that I love about the startup world is how supportive everyone is. Those early conversations were pivotal in defining the direction that the company is on today. Those conversations, for example, helped us realize that the biggest need for better auth products came from B2B companies - whereas previously we were building for everyone.
